The film was released on December 19, 1997 to critical and commercial success. It was nominated for fourteen Academy Awards , winning eleven, including Best Picture and Best Director . The film grossed over two billion dollars worldwide, becoming the first film to gross over one billion dollars, and held the box office record for twelve years until 2009 when it was surpassed by Cameron’s Avatar . A 3D version of the film was released on April 4, 2012, to commemorate the centennial of the tragedy. Disney announced that the film would be re-released in 4K , HDR , and 3D formats on February 10, 2023, in celebration of the film’s 25th release . Frank Darabont purchased the rights to Stephen King’s story in 1987, but no developments occurred for five years. He then wrote the script in eight weeks. Two weeks after submitting it to Castle Rock Entertainment, he secured a budget of $25 million for the production. Pre-production began in January 1993. The film was shot in Maine , with principal photography taking place almost entirely in Mensfield, Ohio, where the Ohio State Reformatory served as a prison from June 1993 to August 1993.
